Fruitland Park, Fla. — Because that’s what they do best, WFTV Channel 9 Reporter Berndt Peterson’s live report on November 22 found two Fruitland Park residents who oppose development of The Villages of Fruitland Park.

Neighbors Larry Bates and Mark Wales appeared on camera articulating a sentiment that’s fairly widespread in Old Fruitland Park: that newcomers might change things too much and too fast.

Peterson focused his report on news that Fruitland Park city commissioners voted last week to establish a Charter Review Committee.

The committee, composed of resident volunteers, would study and then recommend possible changes to the city’s charter—its governing document.

Commissioners would decide which recommendations to put on the ballot and then voters would have their say—up or down—at the next election.

One of those changes might be to divide the city—including the new Villages of Fruitland Park, set to start development this time next year—into single-member districts. Each “district” would then elect one city commissioner. Districts would be drawn to include equal numbers of residents.

Today, every Fruitland Park voter can vote for every commission seat. In a single-member district, each voter would elect one commisisoner—the commissioner for that district.

That would assure voters in Old Fruitland Park that they can elect commissioners who might best represent their districts—and their neighborly interests.

Commissioners—and residents—are concerned that new Villages of Fruitland Park residents will outnumber Old Fruitland Park in about two years. According to The Villages development plans, that’s exactly what will happen.
